Im Februar 1975 strahlte das WDR Fernsehen ein Streitgespräch zwischen Esther Vilar und Alice Schwarzer aus. Das Gespräch ist leider in Vergessenheit geraten. Fakten störten Alice Schwarzer bereits damals kaum.
Vilar veröffentlichte im Jahr 1971 ihr Buch „Der dressierte Mann“, das für genug Zündstoff für das Gespräch sorgte.

Auch provokante Bücher können zu Klassikern werden: Mitten in die Aufbruchsstimmung der Frauenbewegung Anfang der siebziger Jahre platzte Esther Vilar mit ihrer Streitschrift ›Der dressierte Mann‹ und wurde zur Bestsellerautorin. Sie drehte den Emanzipationsspieß um und entlarvte ihre Geschlechtsgenossinnen als hartgesottene Ausbeuterinnen des Mannes.
Esther Vilar wurde nach Veröffentlichung ihrer Bücher von Feministinnen zusammengeschlagen, bedroht und verfolgt.

Waren Sie sich beim Schreiben bewusst, was Sie mit dem Buch auslösen werden?
Ich dachte, ich müsse nur so ein Buch schreiben und die Menschen liefen zu mir über, weil ich alles viel logischer erkläre. Aber es kam ganz anders. Ein kleiner Teil kam zu mir, aber der grössere Teil kippte noch heftiger ins Gegenteil, in die militante Frauenbewegung. Nein, ich konnte mir beim Schreiben eine Polemik dieses Ausmasses nicht vorstellen. Das kann sich kein Mensch vorstellen.
Die rhetorischen Unterschiede und die Gewalt, die Esther Vilar aufgrund ihrer Bücher durch Feministinnen erleiden musste, zeigen einige Dinge deutlich auf. Man muss halt die Brillen tauschen: Von der feministisch-ideologischen zur objektiven Brille.
